Ruth Roman was born on June 22nd, 1939, on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. The actress was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner to help them be able to survive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She went to school there. She left the school only after two years in order to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was filled with challenges. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine, she found it difficult to secure work for stage. The following job she got was a "hat check" lady at a club before she gave up and moved back to Boston. In Boston, when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time, was an usherette. She graduated with a degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
